While most people understand that there is a difference between medical walk-in clinics, family medical offices, and a dentist office, few people actually understand the exact difference. There is also some confusion about exactly which facility is the most patient oriented one. That is why we will review each type of medical facility.

The most obvious difference between a dental office and the other facilities is that the dentist is only going to be concerned with their patient’s oral health. What many people do not understand is that the dentist knows a great deal about a person’s general health based on their teeth. Things like eating disorders, stress, and some types of cancers can be seen simply by looking at the person’s mouth. Sometimes the dentist is the first person to suspect that a person could have a more serious medical condition and will recommend that they make an appointment with their regular doctor. For regular dental work a person will want to make an appointment with a family dentist. If they require more extensive work, the family dentist will recommend a specialist. To improve the general appearance of the person’s teeth they will want to go to a cosmetic dentist.

No one wants to think about the possibility of a patient having a heart attack. The only thing worse than a patient having an unexpected heart attack, is one having the unexpected attack when they are in the dentist's office and in the process of having their teeth cleaned. While no dentist wants to think about this happening, the reality is that it can which means that it is in the dentist best interest to do everything they can to be prepared for such a development.

The best thing that a dentist can do is make sure that everyone, including the dentist, is trained in how to deal with the heart attack. The better trained everyone is, the more likely they are going to be to react appropriately and possibly save the patient's life. Making sure that everyone is trained in both CPR and first aid is an excellent starting point. The staff can actually set aside time when everyone gets certified at the same time which will turn the process into a fun bonding experience.

It is not at all unusual for a person to have to get either a crown or laminate put on at least one of their teeth during their lifetime. The reason for having the crown or laminate attached can be triggered by a variety of factors that can include things from a chipped tooth to enamel erosion and even discoloration.  One of the things that many people want to know when they get the crown or laminate attached to their existing tooth is whether or not they can have their teeth bleached to improve the coloring and eliminate stains.

The practice of getting the teeth bleached is becoming increasingly common. In the past the bleaching was done by individuals who specialized in cosmetic dentistry, however since the bleaching is a good way for an office to earn additional revenue more and more family dentist have started to add teeth bleaching to the list of services they provide. This is actually a good thing. The dentist will have a better idea of the pros and cons of getting the bleaching done and will also be able to properly advise the patient about the way that the bleaching will affect any existing dental work.

Parents know that they are going to have to get their child to the dentist. Just like they know that once they start bringing the child to the dentist, they are going to have to bring the child back every six months for cleaning. The problem parents' face is that they do not know when the child is old enough to start seeing the dentists and this lack of knowledge can become the source for various problems. Not knowing when to visit the dentist many parents delay the visit to the dentist, in some cases, until it is a bit late.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, parents should start making arrangements for their child to see the dentist once their very first tooth has erupted through the gum line. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry further recommends that the tooth should have appeared before the child's first birthday and that if it has failed to do so, the child be brought to the dentist so that x-rays can be done and a reason for the delay found.

Choosing a dentist is not something a person should take lightly. The person they settle on is going to be responsible for the care of their teeth. In addition actually cleaning and maintaining the health of the patient's teeth, the dentist is also expected to look for signs that could indicate a more serious health problem and possibly take care of these minor problems before they turn into more serious ones.

One of the things the patient needs to judge when they are trying to find a dentist is how anxious the idea of going to the dentist makes them. While no dentist goes out of their way to cause undue stress to the patient there are some who go out of their way to ease the patients fears. One of the ways that these dentists reduce the stress of the visit is by choosing equipment that is quieter. Another way is that they have taken courses in human behaviors and been trained in techniques that help ease fear.
